Affiliate and editorial disclosure

Build Your Toolkit is free to use. It earns money when you sign up for some apps after following one of its links. This page explains how that works, how apps are chosen and ordered, and where our facts come from.
Some links on this site are affiliate links. We may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you.
How we earn
Some app makers run affiliate programs, many of them through Dub, an affiliate platform. When we're accepted into one, the “Try” button for that app carries our tracking link. If you follow it and sign up for a paid plan, or for some apps simply start using it, the maker may pay us a commission. You pay the same price either way. Tracked links are marked as sponsored in the page code and labelled “affiliate link” beside them.
Apps without an affiliate program are listed too, with a plain link to their own site. The site carries no ads.
Money doesn't decide what you see
No app pays to be listed or placed higher. The ranking never looks at what we would earn: an app that pays us nothing is shown, and placed, exactly as it would be if it paid us. Whether an app has an affiliate program isn't a field the ranking reads.
How apps are chosen
Each category lists the apps that show up most in independent “best of” roundups, plus built-in options such as the dictation in macOS and Windows. For each app we record what its maker's own pages say: the platforms it runs on, its features and its prices, with help from AI and checked against those pages. When a page doesn't say, we leave the detail blank rather than guess.
How apps are ordered
An app shows up only if it meets every answer you give. Everything on screen fits, so the order is about what to look at first: apps that independent reviewers recommend come ahead, the most often recommended first, and the rest follow with the best known first. The first app is labelled “Best match”, and “Best free option” marks the best app with a free plan when the best match has none.
The guides use the same rules with fixed answers. A guide lists only apps that meet everything it asks for, and a guide only exists when at least five do.
We don't test apps
Build Your Toolkit compares facts and sums up what reviewers recommend; it doesn't run its own tests, and no page claims otherwise. Our pages never show star ratings or review counts.
Prices
Prices come from each maker's pricing page, shown in US dollars with the date we checked. Makers change prices and plans often, and some show different prices by country, so the maker's page always has the final word.
Mistakes and corrections
If something is wrong, such as a price, a feature or a broken link, tell us through the contact form. App makers can write to us the same way. We'll check it and fix it.
